Kenosha residents have about five weeks left to set out yard compostables for free curbside pickup under the city's fall collection program.

The program, which returned for 2026 on Oct. 12, runs through Friday, Dec. 4, according to the city's announcement. All compostable materials must go in city-approved biodegradable bags. Three brands qualify: Bag To Nature, BioBag and Ecoguard. Compostables placed in any other type of bag will not be collected.

Bags must be set at the curb in a separate pile no earlier than 6:30 p.m. the day before collection and no later than 6 a.m. on collection day. Each bag must weigh 40 pounds or less.

The city says the biodegradable bag requirement has reduced collection and processing costs while producing higher-quality compost. Collected material is processed into compost that is available to Kenosha residents free of charge when supplies last.

Coupons and where to buy bags

To help offset the cost of the required bags, the city is offering $2 coupons. One coupon is required per box of approved bags, with a limit of four coupons per visit. Coupons cannot be applied to previous purchases.

Coupons are available at the Department of Public Works and City Clerk's office at 625 52nd St., the Kenosha Water Utility at 4401 Green Bay Road and through the city's website at kenosha.org.

The coupons are valid only at participating Kenosha-area retailers, as Kenosha County Eye reported. Approved bags are sold at Prairie Side Ace Hardware, JC Licht Ace Hardware, Menards, Steinbrink's Piggly Wiggly, Lois Family Piggly Wiggly and Woodman's Kenosha.

Residents with questions can call the Department of Public Works at 262-653-4050. The final day for curbside compostables collection is Dec. 4.
