Tremper High School's girls flag football team will compete in Wisconsin's first-ever state tournament on Saturday, Nov. 7, in Green Bay.

The Trojans earned a berth in the inaugural event during the program's first season, according to the Kenosha Unified School District. The tournament will take place at Emplify Health Field, 1025 Lombardi Ave. Game times had not been announced as of Oct. 23, with organizers waiting for other participating leagues to complete their seasons.

The program launched over the summer as a new athletic opportunity for KUSD student-athletes. Nearly 40 players showed up for the first day of tryouts.

"When we first started summer preseason practice, I really had no idea how it would go … Then, on our first day of tryouts, we had almost 40 athletes. It just took off from there," Tremper girls flag football Coach Kelly Marschel said in the district's announcement.

Marschel said senior captain Jada West set a team goal at the start of the season: get to Green Bay for the state playoff tournament. The team delivered.

West said the achievement carries weight beyond the scoreboard.

"This is bigger than just flag football," West said. "We're breaking barriers and creating a legacy that will last forever."

West described the state tournament berth as an opportunity to build something for future Tremper athletes, saying the team entered the season determined to do something memorable in its first year.

The Trojans compete in the Donald Driver-Driven NFL FLAG Football League, a noncontact format that emphasizes football fundamentals and gives athletes of varying skill levels a chance to participate. The league organized Wisconsin's inaugural girls flag football state tournament.

Tremper student-athlete Mallory Meier said the team's growth over the season exceeded expectations.

"I'm very honored to be a part of the very first flag football team at Tremper, and it feels very special to be playing with all of these girls growing the game," Meier said.

Kenosha County Eye also covered the team's qualification on Oct. 15.
